It's that magical time of year when the air is full of cheer... or something like that. At the risk of
sounding cynical, the holidays, and December in general, can be a challenging time for many
people. The increasing social commitments, excessive spending associated with Christmas
shopping, and the constant pressure of unrealistic expectations about what the holidays "should" be can be overwhelming. Additionally, the lack of daylight and sunlight during this season significantly impacts the physical and mental health of many individuals, making it all feel like a lot!
So, how can we reclaim some of the magic during this time of year and truly enjoy the holidays? Shifting our perspective and embracing mindfulness can be a great place to start. I know, I know—cue the eye roll! In today’s world, engaging in mindfulness practice can feel unattainable and like just another task to add to our to-do list. However, mindfulness can simply mean reconnecting with what brings you joy and focusing on what truly matters to us during this season. Instead of fixating on buying presents for our loved ones, we can prioritize being present with them. This shift can help ease expectations and improve our outlook on the holidays.
Here are a few ways to incorporate mindfulness through connection into your holiday season:
-Spend time outside and in nature: Nature allows us to connect with something bigger than
ourselves, inspires us with its natural beauty, and uplifts our mental health.
- Baking: Making Christmas cookies or decorating gingerbread people is a fun activity that engages our senses of sight, smell, and taste. It brings us into the present moment, and who doesn’t love taste-testing fresh-baked cookies?
- Explore your neighbourhood: Bundle up for a night stroll through different neighbourhoods to see the Christmas lights and decorations—it’s a great way to brighten your holidays! Take a travel mug filled with your favourite hot drink to stay warm.
These are just a few ideas to help you reconnect with yourself and the present moment during the often-overwhelming holiday season. These activities are even better when shared with friends, family members, or loved ones. Engaging in any of these mindfulness practices can enhance your experience and help you connect with the present in a meaningful way—what a great “present” to give yourself and your loved ones this holiday season!
Wishing you a peaceful and mindful holiday season,
